Website Design for Business: 7 Rules to Make It Look Premium and Work

Bohdana Lakhman, ISKRA October 2026 6 min read

Short answer: good business website design is not complicated effects but a clear structure, a limited palette, readable text, high-quality real photos and a visible call to action on every screen. Design should help a person quickly understand what you offer and take the next step.

Seven rules of website design

  • One main message on the first screen. What you do, for whom and why it is worth it, in one or two sentences.
  • A limited palette. One main color, one accent and neutral background and text. Keep the accent for buttons.
  • Two fonts at most. One for headings, one for body text. Body text from 16 px.
  • Space. Padding between blocks creates a sense of quality, while crowded pages look cheap.
  • Real photos instead of stock. Team, product, projects: trust that no stock picture can give.
  • A visible call to action. “Order”, “Book”, “Get an estimate”: one main button per screen in a clear color.
  • Phone first. Design from the mobile version: most people will see your site there. More in mobile-friendly website.

What ruins a design

  • Auto-rotating sliders. People do not have time to read, and the site gets slower.
  • Too many animations. Motion should highlight the main thing, not distract.
  • Low contrast. Light grey text on white looks nice only in a mockup.
  • Different button and spacing styles. The site looks assembled from different pieces.
  • Text inside images. Search engines and screen readers cannot read it.

Template or custom design

A template is faster and cheaper but looks like other sites. A custom design is tailored to the business and memorable. For a small business the best compromise is often a proven structure plus your own colors, fonts, photos and copy. To prepare materials, see how to prepare texts and photos.

How much website design costs

  • Adapting a template to your brand — $100–300.
  • Custom design of a one-page site — $250–600.
  • Custom design of a multi-page site — $500–1500+.
Typical mistakes in practice are covered in common website mistakes, and when an old design should be replaced, in website redesign.

Frequently asked questions

Which colors should a business website use?

One main brand color, one accent for buttons and neutral background and text. Contrast and consistency matter more than a trendy shade.

Does a website need animation?

Yes, but restrained: light block appearance and button feedback. Complex effects slow the site and distract.

How long does design take?

Usually 3–7 days for a one-page site and 1–3 weeks for a multi-page site, including revisions.
